The building was constructed in
about 1912 and was originally a cigar factory. This display
features cigar making memorabilia and items when later used as a pool
hall. Notice the hand painted sign on the cement block wall --
it's over 100 years old. |
"Schools of Otsego County"
provides a hands on experience to rural schools of yesteryear.
More than 40 one-room schools were in operation throughout our county
during the late 1800s thru the early 1970s. Photos of many of the
schools and a locator map help illustrate an important part of our past.

Railroads and logging were the
first activities in our county. Several lumbering companies and
sawmills operated during the late 1800s into early 1900s. Many
communities sprung up around Otsego County to accommodate the booming
industry. Now most are abandoned and referred to as Ghost Towns.
The Michigan Central Railroad entered Otsego County in 1873 and the
Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad began in 1913. |
The Chatter Box restaurant was a popular hang our for local teenagers.
When the Otsego County Library purchased the land and building - they
donated this booth to the museum.
The jukebox was donated by Jim and Betty Moore |
