Library Millage Renewal Proposal

On August 5, 2014, there will be a Library Millage Renewal Proposition on the primary election ballot. This is NOT a new tax. It is only a reauthorization of an existing millage at the same rate of 4/10 mill that has been in place since 1994 and ensures the continued operation of our public libraries for the next six years.

  • The Library Millage is the source of 67% of the Library’s annual budget.

  • In Michigan, public libraries are 97% locally funded.

  • This is NOT a bond issue for a new building or expansion.  Monies collected are for operational purposes.

  • No taxes are captured by the Gaylord DDA on any residential properties in the City, County or Townships.

  • The Otsego County Library has twice been recognized by the State Library for outstanding services.

  • We also received the highest satisfaction ratings in
a county Quality of Life survey.

In 2013, 118,921 people walked through our doors, borrowing 175,131 items.

Online resources received 91,502 uses from homes, schools and offices.

12,664 questions were answered.

The Library offered 371 preschool, K-3, tween, teen and adult programs with an attendance of 10,966.

Computers were used 29,210 times, with another 11,521 using library wireless.

We issued 1,247 new library cards for a total of 21,257 registered users.

On an Otsego County home with an assessed value of $100,000, this millage would cost $20.00 annually.
