The HIGH COUNTRY PATHWAY was developed by the Department of Natural Resources, Forest Management Division, and funded through the Recreation Bond Program. The pathway is a 70 mile loop extended eastward from the heart of the Pigeon River Country in Otsego County into the Atlanta State Forest in Montmorency County and northwards up into southwest Presque Isle County and southern Cheboygan County through the heart of Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. It is designed to provide the more enthusiastic backpacker with about one week of high quality outdoor adventure - Michigan style!

Below is a reproduction of the center map from the Field Guide to the High Country Pathway published by the Pigeon River Country Association. This 25 page water-resistant, pocket size booklet contains eight more detailed maps describing points of interest, the various types of forest cover, etc., as well as general information regarding the trail and the various campgrounds.

Note: The pathway (marked in deep red on the above map) is traced out in blue on the original (to still be visible to red-lensed flashlights for night-time hiking!). Areas covered by each of the seven more detailed maps are shown by the oblong blue frames above.

The booklet is available at the Pigeon River Country Forest's Visitor Center as well as by mail from the Pigeon River Country Association ($4.OO + .75 cents for postage and handling). Order by writing the Association at the following address:
