Township Responsibilities

The township Board of Review is formed under MCL 211.28-211.33 which pertain to the General Property Tax Act, Public Act 206 of 1893, as amended. This act created a board of township citizens to examine and review the assessments on the assessment roll. MCL 211.7u also provides for a poverty exemption from real property taxes on a principal residence.

The Board of Review meets to receive and examine the current assessment roll to determine if the assessor has properly assessed all property liable to taxation and to correct errors in the names of taxpayers, legal descriptions and assessments and valuations of property.

Meetings:

The organizational meeting of the Board is held on a Tuesday immediately following the first Monday in March (MCL 211.29(1)). The Board's work must be completed by the first Monday in April.
To hear protests, the Board meets on the second Monday in March starting not earlier than 9 AM and not later than 3 PM, for not less than six hours. The Board must also meet no less than six hours during the remainder of that week, and at least three hours must be held after 6 PM. (MCL211.30(3)).

Appeals to the Board may be in person or by mail. Letters must be received prior to the last day of the board meeting.
The General Property Tax Act allows for a special board of review meeting to be called to correct mistakes on the Tuesday following the third Monday in July and on the Tuesday following the second Monday in December (MCL211.53b(1)). At the July and December meeting, the Board can grant principal residence (homestead) exemptions, review qualified agricultural property exemptions and consider hardship and veteran exemption appeals.

Contact the township's assessor to file an appeal. Contact information is found on the front page of the Dover Township website.
Actual dates for the Board of Review meetings are posted and can be found in the local newspaper.
